It was a frustrating afternoon for Sunderland against Shrewsbury

Josh Maja's header cancelled out Luke Waterfall as Jack Ross' side sealed a point on home soil, with both sides coming close in a dramatic end to the game. Our Sunderland writer, PhiL Smith, has dished out his player ratings from the clash - with some praise for Sunderland's returning stars. Scroll down and click through the pages to see who shone - and struggled - for the Black Cats against Shrewsbury:

Good block at the end to keep the score level and could do little about Waterfall's header early on. 6
Dropped off the levels seen on Boxing Day but came on strong in the second half and made some good runs forward. A little uncertain defensively but got the job done. 6
Taken off early in the second half after falling awkwardly. Not convincing in the first half but it was a superb cross that found Maja at the back post to score the equalising goal. 6

A mixed performance. Some excellent switches of play but some poor decisions on the ball as well. Got away with a loose late attempt at a clearance. 5
Looked very shaky on and off the ball. Not the reassuring presence he was before a recent injury but did close to a first half goal. 5
Took on the long shot too often when there were better options. Not at his most dominant. 5
Looked a bit short of the pace again but was good in the latter stages and it was a superb dummy to help get Sunderland back on level terms just before half-time. 6
So often been the talisman in attack of late but not today. Not able to beat his man as regularly as usual and not as many threatening crosses into the box. 6
Got free on a couple of occasions with some clever turns but gave the ball away too often in promising areas. Decision making not quite at its best at the moment. 5
In a very poor opening did as much as anyone to try and keep the ball and get Sunderland going. Good pass to free Oviedo for the first goal. 6
Great finish late in the first half to go within one goal of Tom Eaves at the top of the charts. 6
Quickly got to the pace of the game but couldnt make the most of some promising positions. 6
Couldnt convert a couple of half chances to get the winner but held it up relatively well. 6
Very good again, made some promising runs into the channels and caused problems. 6
