Sue Clarke, Macmillan Partnership Manager for Durham, Darlington and Tees, confirmed the centre, based in the Castle Dene Shopping Centre, was to shut.

"Discussions have been taking place for some time with our partners in the Peterlee service around different ways to provide cancer support and information for people in East Durham," she said.

"The current service will continue until March 2017. We can assure people affected by cancer locally that there will be continued support and we are working with our partners to design that appropriately."
