Leigh Newton, 17, from Wheatley Hill, an East Durham College student, competed at the World Kickboxing and Karate Union’s World Championships held in Benidorm, Spain, where more than 30 federations from around the world took part. Following qualification for Team England, through a national competition in Birmingham earlier last year, Leigh, joined up with other members of the team to represent England at the finals. Leigh, who studies on a level 3 sports studies course competing in the 55kg Thai Boxing category fought through three tough rounds to make the final where she narrowly lost out to a Canadian opponent. She only took up the sport three years ago and, was disappointed with her performance in the final despite giving away 7kg to her larger opponent; but she was still proud to have won a silver medal for her country.

More than 1,000 students from The Academy at Shotton Hall generously donated tins, packets, dried food and treats to East Durham Trust’s Feed (Food Emergency East Durham) project. The foodbank provides food parcels to people in East Durham who are in crisis situations whether it’s for an individual or a family. The Feed project relies entirely on donations of either food or cash from the public and from local businesses.  Students at The Academy at Shotton Hall chose the project for the third year running because it is a cause close to home. The idea that they are helping neighbours, friends and their local community, especially at this time of year, motivates them to give generously.

There is a local Job Club based in Seascape Children’s Centre, Ellison Road, which meets every Monday from 10am to noon. For further information, contact Helen Waller on 0191 5693511.
