The Oases team were in Cotsford Junior School in Horden on Wednesday, with a carousel of activities for the whole school to enjoy. Topics covered included: making electricity; sources of renewable energy; energy saving ideas and the effects of climate change on people and animals.

Congratulations to Year 7 Theatre School students Emily Atkinson and Ashleigh Armstrong, who have from The Academy at Shotton Hall successfully auditioned and gained scholarships for 2016 from The Charlotte Leatherbarrow Foundation. The scholarship aims to fulfil young performers’ potential in the performing arts by providing training and support, both as an artist and an individual, so they can flourish in a challenging and competitive world.

Cotsford Junior School is working with Groundwork NE, to develop the allotment, on Third Street, into a community garden. If any child’s relative or neighbour has any time to spare, on a Friday afternoon, between 2pm and 4pm, contact the school on 5864660.

East Durham College barbering students have been treated to a talk from the British Barbering Association. The team from the BBA visited the college to talk to students about the history of the barbering trade and hold some demonstrations to show students some traditional techniques. This was the first stop for barbers Mike Taylor and Hannah Grigg, who set up the BBA, as they tour the country to talk to students about the history of the barbering industry and show how important barbering qualifications are to the trade. 

Staff Sergeant Paddy Fox BEM died in London at the age of 83. His funeral was held at The Royal Hospital Chelsea on January 28. He worked tirelessly in the Horden Drill Hall as an Army recruitment officer and will be remembered by many in the area. Born in Tipperary in Ireland, he signed up aged 17, serving in Northern Ireland, Germany, Cyprus and Malta. He was awarded the British Empire Medal and a Meritorious Service Medal for his services to the Army. Mr Fox retired from the armed forces 28 years ago and joined the Chelsea Pensioners in 2001. In addition to promoting the local Poppy Appeal for six years, Mr Fox achieved national fame and a place in the pop charts, singing in a seven-strong group of Chelsea Pensioners who recorded an album in 2010 entitled Men in Scarlet.

The Shinwell Medical Centre, based on Fourth Street, Horden, is being renovated to offer patients and staff improved surroundings thanks to a £1.4million loan from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking. The bank’s investment will also see the Shinwell Medical Centre add an extension onto its premises to enable the Horden Group Practice, previously based on Sunderland Road, to move into the property. The extensive refurbishment which will bring two practices into one building.
