Castle Eden Dene volunteers Wednesday working group worked with Durham County Council Country Side Rangers at Crimdon Beach, helping to put up fencing along the stretch of beach, ready for the migrating birds '“ Little Terns. These special little birds are protected and migrate from as far as West Africa in the winter. It was a great day's work by all.

The Pulse is a new Peterlee youth club, formed for young people in the area to attend every Friday at Peterlee Leisure Centre, from 6.30pm– 8.30pm. There will be drinks and snacks available and a place to relax with friends. Coun Mary Cartwright, Mayor of Peterlee, along with police, Asda, Durham County Council and Castle Dene Shopping Centre have been involved in a multi-agency approach to tackle antisocial behaviour.

A mature student has achieved outstanding results on her East Durham College GCSE course, passing her maths in half the time predicted by lecturers as she looks to further her career in education. Tammy Mascarenhas, 35, from Trimdon, started in September 2014 to study on a functional skills course to further her maths and English skills. She has proved to be an exceptional student, achieving her two-year goal in just over a year. She has now joined a higher level teaching assistant course which will further develop her career in the education sector.

The Academy at Shotton Hall Year 9 student Lewis Watson carried the flag onto the pitch at the Etihad stadium onto a pitch in front of 60,000 people. Lewis’s grandad won tickets to the Champion’s League semi-final match between Manchester City and Real Madrid through his job at Nissan. As part of the prize, Lewis was given the opportunity to be a flag bearer which involved carrying the flag onto the pitch before the match. He also got to take home a bag full of goodies including a jacket, trousers and a hat.

Our Lady of the Rosary RCVA Primary School has had a very sporty week. The boys’ football team played in the Bishop Cunningham Cup against some local Catholic schools. Two draws and a win ensured that the team went through to the finals of the competition. Pupil Oliver Wylie has been showing his skills in basketball and won trophies for being top scorer in the under 11s league and also the most improved player in the Teesside league. Oliver has been chosen to play for the under 14 regional side in a national competition in September.

Durham County Council has started work on its popular wild flower planting scheme around the county. The project, which attracted a huge amount of positive feedback about the array of multi-coloured displays on roundabouts and verges last year, is now being rolled out to additional sites throughout the county. Our nearest is the A19 roundabout to Peterlee.

The Academy at Shotton Hall students Harrison Metcalfe-Jones and Jake Haygarth travelled to London during the Easter holidays to play at LSO St Luke’s, a venue used regularly by the BBC. The talented two were invited to take part in the National Orchestra For All (NOFA) spring concert. This is a programme set up in the belief that no young person aged 11-18 should be excluded from the extraordinary artistic experience and non-musical benefits of making music.
