Peterlee and Horden - Down Your Way

Peterlee Garden Safari will be held on Sunday from 10am to 4pm, meeting at Shotton Hall. This is part of the National Gardens Open for Charity scheme. Combined admission is £3, children free. Tickets must be bought from Shotton Hall and a map will be provided. Vehicles will be needed s they are spread around the town. Refreshments will be available at Shotton Hall and plants will be on sale. Wheelchair access is available to most gardens but not all.

A former East Durham College boxing and joinery student has returned to college to talk to students about his success since leaving. Luke O’Rourke, 26, from Consett, studied joinery at the college between 2006 –2008 while he also took part in the college’s boxing scholarship programme. After leaving college he went on to work for Absolute Granite, where he spent five years specialising in the installation of kitchen worktops. In 2015, he decided it was time to set up his own business, True Granite, which has gone from strength to strength. Luke’s two man team is constantly busy with a packed schedule that has seen them working on projects across the country.

A Healthy Living Week at The Academy at Shotton Hall promoted healthy choices with exciting activities throughout the week. Year 7 students tried smoothie making using the smoothie bike and created healthy wraps with a chef. Year 10 students witnessed a Ready, Steady, Cook demo, Year 8 students saw a healthy living play and Year 9 students took part in guru workshops with the Bread and Butter life coach.

Good news from Trevor, the Little Tern Warden at Crimdon. There are 84 pairs of Little Terns nesting with lots of chicks hatching (10 nests had hatched already). Ringed Plovers are also nesting on the beach. Please take care when visiting Crimdon and keep dogs on a lead. Trevor will be in the hut to answer any question.

Ben Ridden, from The Academy at Shotton Year 10, and his football team were specially chosen to be ball boys at the England vs Australia match at the Stadium of Light. They got front row seats and a tour of the stadium, a England track suit, the chance to have a kick-about on the pitch before the game started and met the players.

A team of kind-hearted students from East Durham College have spent a morning in Durham lending their expertise and skills to homeless people in the local area. The event was organised by community group Haircuts4Homeless, who organise these mornings all across the country, with this being the first in the North East. Working alongside the Durham Salvation Army and East Durham College, Haircuts4Homeless is now set to run these events monthly in Durham City. Haircuts4Homeless is a community group set up by veteran hairdresser Stewart Roberts, who organised events to encourage skilled hairdressers to give up their time for free to provide haircuts to homeless people. East Durham College barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood has been made the Help4Homeless Durham team leader and she is delighted to have the opportunity to work on the project with students and help use her skills to give back something to the community.

Cotsford Junior School will hold its summer fair on Monday, July 11. To help raise money for the school and its pupils. Donations are needed for the tombola and raffle prizes – items such as bottles, sweets, chocolates, packaged and tinned food with a long shelf life, toiletries and anything else that could be used as part of the summer fund-raising will be gratefully received as well as DVDs, CDs, books, bric-a-brac, children’s toys and games. There will be various stalls, including sweet tombola, play your cards right, design a biscuit, SAFC inflatable target goal, pocket money toys, and much more. All of the funds raised will help the school purchase additional resources for pupils.
