Peterlee and Horden - Down Your Way

Darren Meadows, founder of Hordens Helping Hands, was nominated by Horden Regeneration Partnerships to be a candidate for Durham County Council Chairman Medal for the work he carried out for the community for the last couple years. East Durham Area Action Partnership (AAP) invited him to its board meeting to present him with a certificate of nomination for the work he has carried out in Horden over the last few years.

The project was to send out the message to residents of Horden to care about the village where they live and come together to make it a better area. They worked in the denes and the beach and generally tidied up the place. Residents were supported by the National Trust, Grahame Morris MP, Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team, Durham Heritage Coast, Walkers and Wilkinsons. Horden’s Little Helping Hands is aimed at local school children, to teach future generation about environmental issues and to work in the great outdoors.

In May Cotsford Junior School achieved the Green Flag Award for the fourth time, this is Eco-Schools top award. A total of 17,786 schools registered but only 1,131 schools have achieved the Green Flag Award. Eco-Schools Award is an international award programme, providing a framework to help embed these principles into school life. It is managed in England by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. Out of all the schools registered, 6,394 have achieved the Silver Award and 4,543 have achieved the Bronze Award.

Cotsford Infants School raised £4 from Happy Shoesday and the money was donated to Living Streets.

East Durham College’s Houghall campus had a special visitor, King Letsie III of Lesotho at the end of June. The King, along with Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso, visited the college campus as part of their visit to the Diocese of Durham, celebrating 30 years of the Durham Diocese–Lesotho Link. Alongside The Rt Rev Paul Butler, the King and Queen toured the college site learning about its history and future, seeing details on the stunning new £12million development, before visiting the small animal care unit and being treated to a sheep shearing demonstration by students. During their time in the region, The royal party, also visited Venerable Bede Church, The National Glass Centre, Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Service, a Twenty20 game at Durham County Cricket Club and a special service of celebration of the 30-year Durham-Lesotho Link. 

Life mapping, mosaic workshop will be held at Castle Dene Shopping Centre this week. The ‘Mosaic Lounge’ project will invite passers-by in the shopping centre to have a go at mosaic art. This project was part of our Let’s Create funding programme in partnership with East Durham Trust.

A new savings partnership could help residents to pile up the pounds in preparation for the festive season. DH has teamed up with NEFirst Credit Union to support its Christmas Savings Incentive Scheme. The new scheme will help residents plan ahead for what is a costly time of year, with the added incentive of entry into a free prize draw.
