The Academy at Shotton Hall's initial teacher training programme launched 62 new teachers into schools after graduating this term. Now in its third year, the school-based course known as Shotton Hall SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) has put new teachers through their paces, learning in school from day one. Teacher training has traditionally been the auspice of universities, but new courses like that delivered at The Academy at Shotton Hall in Peterlee offer an alternative route where hands'“on classroom experience is offered from the outset.

The Mayor of Peterlee, Mary Cartwright, raised a £11,796.50 for her chosen charities. The charities to beneit are Peterlee & District Lions, Stonham Home Group, Royal Signals Association, 1st Peterlee Brownies, Legal Care (UK) Ltd, Peterlee Macmillan Centre, Marie Curie, Haswell & District Mencap, DDS Deaf & Deafened Support, St Cuthbert’s Church, Fairclough Court Ladies’ Club, Bannatyne Lodge Nursing Home, Butterwick Hospice, Child Protection Unit, Peterlee & Nordenham Friendship group, Shop Girls Art Project, 1st Peterlee Scouts, Rotary Club of Easington & Peterlee, 2nd and 3rd Peterlee Scouts. East Durham College lecturer Felicity Evens will be taking part in an international competition between August 14 to 20 to represent Team GB at the third Horseball World Championship in Ponte de Lima, Portugal. Felicity took up the sport six years ago and now plays for the Warwickshire Warriors, and this will be the second time she has been selected to represent Team GB. She was part of the team that finished fourth at last year’s European Championships in Bordeaux, France. Horseball is like a combination of polo, rugby and basketball. It is one of the 10 disciplines officially recognised by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports. The team is looking to raise money for the trip to the tournament and members are selling raffle tickets with the winner becoming the team’s sponsor for the tournament.

Even though the weather tried its best to ruin Our Lady of the Rosary RC Primary School summer fair the turnout was fantastic. Credit must go to everyone who had a hand in organising the fair, running the stalls and tidying up afterwards. The fair raised £1,791.76. Thank you all so much for your generosity, both in money and in time and other ways.

Horden RFC is recruiting new players. The 2016/17 season is an exciting time to be part of an ambitious club which is looking to strengthen all three men’s squads, female junior squads and the mini and junior section. With more than 30 players already attending preseason training, the club is looking for players who want to try to improve themselves, those that want to drop down from a high level or want to play for the social aspect of the game. The club prides itself on being very welcoming and family orientated. Training times are 6.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Eden Lane Playing Field (SR8 5DJ). An East Durham College student has taken part with a local team in a leg of this year’s Tall Ships Races. Robyn Savage, 19, from Chester-le-Street, joined up with a team sailing on the Black Diamond of Durham on its delivery leg of the prestigious event, leaving Hartlepool on June 29, arriving in Antwerp, Belgium, on July 6. Robyn, a former sea cadet, who is currently studying an animal management course at the college’s Houghall campus, applied for the opportunity to take part through the college’s Students’ Union, who also helped her raised the £500 needed to take part.
