Horden Heritage Centre and Vintage Tea Room is located in the Welfare Park and is open three days per week on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am to 3pm. The centre is now tenants of the tea rooms and is run by volunteers. There is a lift to get upstairs for those who cannot manage the stairs. The museum, which was opened in 2010 by Grahame Morris, MP, was formerly the pit’s Ambulance Control Room. With archive photographs completing the feel of the museum, visitors can see for themselves this remarkable collection of East Durham mining history. They can see how people used to live 100 years ago in recreations of a Victorian parlour room and kitchen alongside the Mining Museum. The colliery in Horden was opened in 1900 and employed hundreds of local people in its prime before closing in 1987.

Strawberry Cycles in Davy Drive closed its doors for the very last time in July. With a struggling economy and a very uncertain financial future, it has been one of the hardest decisions to make. They have been going for more than 15 years. Thanks go to all the staff and all customers who that have been with them on their amazing journey, supported your local bike shop and thank you for that. They held a huge closing down sale.

The competition against Easington, Seaham, Dene, Wellfield and St Bede’s saw students compete in the 100m, 200m, 300m 800m and 1500m run, discus, relay race and more. The other four teams from the Academy (Year 7 boys and girls and Year 8 boys and girls) also came out with a fantastic result - all second place - well done.
