East Durham College is delighted to be offering an exciting new Royal Horticultural Society course. The RHS Level 3 certificate in the principles of garden planning, construction and planting is a two-year part time course, based at the college's Houghall campus. The course starts this week and runs every Thursday. The first session will take place between 6.30pm and 9pm, with all other sessions from 6pm to 9pm. You will take in four main topic areas during your time on the course, understanding the selection and use of landscaping elements in the garden, understanding garden survey techniques and design principles, understanding the setting out and construction of landscaping elements in and understanding a range of specialist elements in the establishment of garden and urban plantings.

Peterlee Town Council is holding the Mayor’s Charity Ball on Friday at Shotton Hall from 7.30pm to midnight. There will be a five-course dinner and dancing with Betcha by Golly Wow. Tickets are £25 from Wendy, ring 586 2491.

Pop along for cuppa, a cake and a chat on Thursday 9am to noon at Roseby Road Wellbeing Centre, Horden. Tea and coffee, light breakfast and cakes will be served. All donations received will go to the British Lung Foundation.

The Academy at Shotton Hall enthusiastic Year 8 drama club recently took part in a drama workshop to help them with delivering Shakespearean language, their acting skills and their confidence. The workshop was part of their involvement in the Shakespeare Schools Festival 2016, in which the school had two entries this year. A Year 8 group performed The Tempest and a primary group, made up of children from all the feeder primary schools, performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The performances are on at the Gala Theatre in Durham on Monday, November 7, at 7pm. Tickets are on sale at the Gala box office now.

A free fireworks night will be held at The Pavilion, Helford Road, on Saturday at 6.30pm. Nobles Fun Fair will be there from 4pm and children’s entertainment from 4pm. There is no parking at this event. The Wish will be appearing in the Pavilion with free entry.

A group of girls from The Academy at Shotton Hall went off the beaten track to achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. They started at Stocksfield railway station and walked eight kilometres, navigating using only a map and compass to find their way to Broomley Grange where they camped for the night. The following morning they walked a further 17.8km to Corbridge, again using only a map and compass. They were the fifth Duke of Edinburgh group to have completed the award this year. The official Duke of Edinburgh assessor’s report said: “The whole group worked well together and navigated successfully in an area with an intricate network of footpaths, which were in places hard to find on the ground. All the girls were strong and capable, I particularly admired the teamwork of the group as they were always smiling and supporting each other. Well done for completing a challenging expedition and best of luck with any remaining parts of your Bronze Award. I would strongly recommend that if possible you progress to Silver Level.”

New for Horden Centennial Centre, behind St Mary’s Church, Blackhills Terrace, Tai Chi is held with Paul Young. No previous experience is needed. Go along and try it out each Monday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. For more information, ring 5861148. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that has evolved over centuries to become a means of alleviating stress and anxiety, a form of “meditation in motion.”
