Peterlee and Horden - Down Your Way

A new family fitness initiative has worked with more than 200 young people and their parents. My Sporting Chance is delivered by Durham County Council’s physical activity officer Chris Elliott, NHS Health visitor Lisa Walvin and NHS health trainer Alex Birbeck. Each eight-week initiative provides fitness testing and health screening, along with fun innovative physical activity sessions for parents and young people, aged six to 13. The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool held its Spoo-Quay event last month with more than two hours of ghoulish fun, games and performances. The museum’s historic quayside was transformed into a Halloween experience with craft workshops and storytelling for children on board the oldest warship afloat in Europe, HMS Trincomalee. There were also performances from East Durham College students.

Creative industries students from East Durham College have been taking part in special events over the weekend celebrating all things Peterlee. Stemming from last year’s Why Art Man festival, which was held around the town centre, the steering group called Inspire Peterlee was set up. Inspire Peterlee features people from around the local area, including staff from East Durham College’s creative industries department, who are looking to celebrate the town’s history and help put arts in Peterlee on the map. The group has set out a five-year plan, where they aim to hold special events each year celebrating the town and major anniversaries, such as 70 years of Peterlee in 2018 and the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Pavilion in 2019. This year’s Peterlee Arts Festival was a 1960s inspired performances with students from the college putting on musical performances at the Apollo Pavilion as part of the celebrations.

Cotsford Junior School girls’ netball team were in action at St Bede’s on and won four games and drew one, making it through to the finals. Mrs Robinson said that the girls played really well.

Staff and students across East Durham College’s campuses have taken part in remembrance services to pay tribute to fallen service men and woman. A service at the Peterlee campus, saw staff and students come together in the atrium to hear readings from uniformed public services students before a bugler played a rendition of The Last Post then a two minutes silence was observed. Over at the Houghall campus staff and students gathered at the Memorial Stone for the Royal British Legion service which saw staff member Julie Carmichael play The Last Post, which was followed by a two-minute silence. After the silence, poems were read and attendees laid wreaths around the remembrance stone to mark the occasion.

The Christmas Lights Switch On Spectacular takes place on Friday from 4.30pm to 6pm, in association with 103.4 Sun FM. There will be entertainment and live music, including performances from Dance Jam, and competitions.
