One person has died after they were struck by a train.

Emergency services rushed to the East Coast mainline between Washington and Chester-le-Street only to discover that the person, whose identity has still to be revealed, was dead.

There was "significant disruption" to services following the incident at 7.43pm on Saturday.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We are working to identify the person and inform their family. However this incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

"If you witnessed this incident, please call 0800 405040 so we can provide you with the appropriate support."
