Woman dies in Seaham house fire

An investigation has been launched after a woman died in a house fire in Seaham on Thursday morning (February 18).

At around 5.40am, firefighters were called to a house fire on Bethune Avenue, Seaham.

Sadly a woman was found inside the house and sadly died at the scene, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed.

No one else was injured in the fire or rescued from the property and the cause of the fire is not thought to be suspicious at this time.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will now be carried out.

Group Manager Colin Davis said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with the woman’s family and friends at this time.

"Our fire investigation team is now working to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.”

Fire engines from Seaham and Peterlee attended and breathing apparatus crews went into the house where they found the woman, who sadly died at the scene.

A Durham Constabulary spokesman added: “Police were called at 5.45am today to assist the fire service at a house fire in Bethune Avenue, Seaham, in which a woman sadly died.

“The fire is not believed to be suspicious. Colleagues from the fire service’s fire investigation team are now working to establish the exact cause of the fire.”
