Watch the heartwarming moment adorable couple married for 58 years are reunited in hospital after four months apart
This is the heartwarming moment a couple who have been married for 58 years are reunited in hospital after four months apart.
Elsie and Jack Doyle were brought together again at Sunderland Royal Hospital on Monday, December 30, after spending time apart due to ill health.
Jack, 82, has lived at Melbury House care home in Seaham since August 2018, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's four years ago.
His wife Elsie, 80, lives at their home in Murton and is battling ovarian cancer. She would usually visit Jack regularly, but was taken into hospital after a recent fall.
As a result of the couple’s mobility troubles and ill health, the pair have been unable to see each other for four months.
But determined to reunite them before the New Year, their family rallied around to organise Jack to pay Elsie a surprise visit in hospital.
Their daughter Tracey Doyle and granddaughter Terri Doyle were their to capture the touching moment the pair saw each other for the first time.
In the emotional video taken by Tracey, Jack can be seen to be pushed into the room in a wheelchair while Elsie jumps up from the bed to hug her husband, whilst shouting ‘Jack, Jack!’
Although Jack’s condition means he is no longer able to fully communicate – it’s clear to see he recognises his wife from his smile the moment he hears her voice.
Granddaughter Terri, who works in A&E at Sunderland Royal, said: “Before nana became ill she used to see him every day.
“We didn’t want it to be next year before they saw each other, so we organised with the care home for my grandda to come into the hospital in a wheelchair taxi.
“She had been really missing him but now seems in good spirits.
“Grandda is very quiet and is unable to put full sentences together, but nana said that he recognised her because he smiled when he saw her.”
Jack and Elise met in a pub in Seaham when they were aged 19 and 17 respectively and married 58 years ago in Seaham.
Jack, worked down the pit, while Elsie worked in Boots the chemist, and the pair had daughter Tracey Doyle.
Over the years Jack - a huge Liverpool FC fan – and Elsie – a Chelsea FC supporter – enjoyed trips away in their caravan.
They now have granddaughter Terri, 34, and three great-grandchildren Tegan Sergent, 12, Jack Sergent, 10 and Elliott Cook, nine months.
A close family the couple also have much-loved niece Sharon Webb.
The video of the reunion has been shared on Facebook, attracting more than 2,000 likes and more than 1,000 shares.
Terri, 34, from Murton, continued: “I can’t believe the response to the video – it has been unbelievable!
“We have had messages from people all over the country and the world from as far as New Zealand.”
