Washington football clubs come together to raise £5,000 to send teenage brain tumour battler Jenna Lee Carrington on dream trip to Disneyland Paris

Two junior football clubs have put rivalry aside to raise £5,000 to help a former player diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour fulfil a lifelong dream.

Washington AFC and Washington Athletic held a charity football match to raise money in support of Jenna Lee Carrington, 14.

The match, which was attended by more 150 people, featured a coaches versus coaches game and saw the Washington community come out in full support for both teams.

The two clubs were determined to use the power of football for a good cause with the support of the community, and are delighted with the results.

Washington AFC Head of Football, Gary Sykes, said: “The support of the Washington Community has been phenomenal towards helping Jenna to achieve her dream of going to Disneyland Paris

“Jenna was not able to attend the game on the evening, but everyone showed their support. We would like to thank everyone for their generosity with their donations.”

Jenna joined Washington AFC Lionesses team last summer, but was unable to make her debut for the club due to headaches and dizziness in September.

In December 2019, the Oxclose School pupil was taken to hospital when she suffered a fit in school after suffering with migraines and feeling unwell.

Her parents took her to the Sunderland Royal Hospital and after a CT scan, she was taken to Newcastle’s RVI where they were told the devastating news she has an inoperable brain tumour that is fast-growing and cancerous.

Jenna’s mam, Wendy Carrington, 38, told the Echo: “She’s really brave. She’s the bravest one of the family.

“We’re keeping our hopes up and treasuring each day we have got. You never know what’s around the corner.”

Among those who have been raising funds to support Jenna is boyfriend Bobby Patterson, 13, who has raised thousands – including from a sponsored spar at District Youth ABC Boxing Club.
