Sunderland has produced a wealth of heroes of the local, national, international and unsung variety. Here are just some of names associated with the city. Please note this is not a definitive list and nor does it include our acting and sporting sons and daughters (we promise to sing their praises separately quite soon). It merely attempts to cover a range of backgrounds and generations to suit different tastes.
9. William Doxford
Founding father of the William Doxford and Sons shipbuilding firm on the banks of the River Wear. It later became Sunderland Shipbuilders. He died aged 70 in 1882. Photo: Sunderland Echo
10. Bryan Ferry
Born in 1945 in Washington, Ferry attended Washington Grammar Technical School before finding fame as the lead singer of 1970s rock band Roxy Music. Photo: steve riding
11. Sir Henry Havelock
Major general renowned for this heroics during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Has statues in his memory in both Mowbray Park, here in Sunderland, and in London's Trafalgar Square. Photo: Other 3rd Party
12. James Herriot
Born James Alfred Wight in 1916 in Brandling Street, near Sunderland's former Roker Park football ground, his family soon moved to Glasgow. He found fame as veterinary author James Herriot and died in 1995. Photo: James Hardisty
