Teenage girl who died following collision in Sunderland's Wessington Way named by police as Alisha Webster

Police have named a teenage girl who has sadly died almost a week after she was knocked down on a major Sunderland road.

The road was closed off until after midnight that day as inquiries were launched into the crash, which happened while she was on foot and involved a car.

She was airlifted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary by the Great North Air Ambulance with life-threatening injuries.

Today, the force confirmed Alisha died as a result of those injuries on Tuesday, February 25.

Her family have been notified and are currently being supported by specialist officers at this time.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, said: “This was a devastating incident which has sadly resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl.

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time and I would ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with their loss.

“We are committed to finding out the circumstances surrounding the incident and an investigation is ongoing to determine events directly before the collision happened.

“I would like to thank members of the public who have already come forward to assist with our enquiries but we would still urge anyone who witnessed the collision, who is yet to contact police, to get in touch as soon as possible.

“We are also keen for anyone who was passing through the area at the time, who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch.”

The North East Air Ambulance sent a double-crewed ambulance, a specialist paramedic, two rapid response paramedics, two of its hazardous area response teams (Hart) and requested the support of the air ambulance.

Traffic throughout the area was diverted as the police managed the scene and launched investigations.
