Sunderland pays tribute to 'exceptional' photographer Dean Matthews

Touching tributes have been paid following the tragic death of ‘exceptional and talented’ photographer Dean Matthews.

A regular at the Stadium of Light, the photographer has captured countless stunning images of Sunderland.

Dean, who was extremely well-known and well-loved in the city, died on Thursday, November 12, after testing positive for Covid-19.

The photographer, who had more than 20,000 followers on Twitter, captured the North East’s beauty and shared it with people around the world.

The city, shook by the devastating news, has taken to Twitter to pay tribute, share memories and honour the ‘fantastic’ photographer.

Dean, who was also a regular contributor to the Sunderland Echo, took wonderful pictures across Wearside which were adored by thousands of people around the world.

Sunderland AFC said: “We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Dean Matthews. A regular at the Stadium of Light and an exceptional photographer, Dean always captured our club and our city at its very best. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. Rest in peace, Dean.”

While Sunderland City Council wrote: “With deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dean Matthews who sadly passed away after testing positive to Covid-19. An exceptional and talented photographer, whose memory will live on in the beautiful photographs he took of this beloved city - RIP Dean.”

Dean was a regular at the Stadium of Light and is described as having a ‘real passion and pride for Sunderland’.

The Fans Museum said: “Heartbreaking news hearing that Dean Matthews passed away today. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends, an image we are immensely proud of, that Dean shot, you will always be with us Dean.”

And the Foundation of Light said: “We're saddened to learn that Dean Matthews has passed away. Dean was an outstanding photographer and a keen supporter of our work, with a real passion and pride for Sunderland. Our thoughts are with Dean's friends and family at this sad time.”
