Sunderland landmarks to be lit orange in anti-violence against women campaign

November 25 marks the UN International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the start of 16 days of activism against gender violence which ends on December 10 (Human Rights Day).
Members of Soroptimists International Sunderland, the Wearside branch of a group which fights for women’s rights, have joined other Soroptimists across the world in taking action and calling for the elimination of violence against women.

Hide AdFrom November 25, the Sunderland branch will be posting on their social media platforms daily to raise awareness of this issue and signpost people to organisations that can help and support, with the help of some well-known faces. Sunderland City Council has also agreed to light landmarks including Penshaw Monument, Cliffe Park lighthouse and Northern Spire during that period to promote the cause.
SI Sunderland President Rosemary Jenkinson said: “Everyone deserves to live a life free from fear, abuse and violence and we were concerned that the pandemic has escalated abuse and closed down routes to safety for women.
"Our social media posts are designed to get the message out that you are not alone and there are organisations who are still able to help you, while also raising awareness of the issue. We must not forget the struggle of victims and survivors of domestic violence in Sunderland, especially in these extraordinary times.”
Sunderland Soroptimists was formed in 1938 in the wake of women receiving the vote and from the legacy of WWI when women had proven their worth in the world of work.
