Des said: “When it reached £20, I told Kelly (the cashier) to stop but she kept going, saying that she would cover the cost of the difference herself.

“I couldn’t believe it, I was taken by surprise. I thought I would have to put the items back as I couldn’t pay for them.”

It wasn’t until he got home and found his bank card that Des could relax and reflect on the situation.

“Shopping at the moment is stressful enough without thinking you have lost your card. I went back to Aldi to repay Kelly and gave her a small token to show my appreciation”, Mr Saunders added.

It wasn’t just Kelly who he praised, adding: “All of the staff are lovely and they are working really hard.

“They aren’t there out of choice, at the moment I’d say they count as emergency workers – they are that important.”
