Sunderland footpath and wall collapses into River Wear

The pathway and wall next to the River Wear at Panns Bank has collapsed into the river.

Photos captured on Wednesday, March 17, show that the pathway, and wall that runs alongside the River Wear has collapsed near to Panns Bank student accommodation, opposite the University of Sunderland’s St. Peter’s Campus.

The remaining part of the footpath has been closed and the surrounding area has been cordoned off.

Diggers have been parked at the site, however no work appears to have been started.

The Environment Agency has said that it is looking into the cause of the collapse of the popular footpath which bystanders said happened last night.

Sunderland City Council has been contacted for comment.
