Sunderland dancer captures pod of dolphins on camera off Roker Pier

A pod of dolphins brought delight to Sunderland families as they played in the water off Roker Pier.

Among the people watching the animals chase fish on Thursday, September 3 was Beth Mitchell, of Fulwell, who took photos of the stunning display.

Beth, 24, caught a couple of the creatures on camera as she stood on Roker Pier with her family.

According to the RSPB, there are between 25 and 30 species of whale and dolphin in UK waters.

The bottlenose dolphin and harbour porpoise are among the most common.

There have been numerous sightings of the creatures along the North East coast this spring and summer – including three orcas off the Seaham coast back in May.

Beth, who works as a production dancer for Celebrity Cruises, added: “We are so lucky to have this amazing beach right on our door steps, as well as these beautiful creatures coming to see us.”
