Sunderland community pulls together ready to pay tribute on Remembrance Sunday

South Hylton’s Remembrance parade will be taking place on Sunday, November 13, at 2.15pm starting at the Tansy Centre in Church Street and heading to the village’s cenotaph in Railway Terrace, where there will be a service.

Community stalwart Carly Mckenna said improvement work had already been completed on the war memorial, and she and fellow volunteers had helped get the village looking shipshape in time for the commemorations.

“The cenotaph has had a big clean up, including re engraved names of the fallen thanks to the support of local councillor Greg Peacock,” she said.

“We've had some amazing local support to have the hedge cut back by Jonny Murtha, new artwork by Karen and Wayne Noble, fully jet washed by Ian Hogarth, purple poppies from Lynne Shawcross, and veteran Darrin Carlisle received some amazing donations to purchase a bench in memory of the late Queen Elizabeth II, a plaque has been donated to go on the bench, c/o Paul McManus.

“We also had some money donated to purchase new planters, compost, slate chippings, bulbs, flowers, shubs, paint for the fence etc (Cllr Greg Peacock and Lesley and Ian Gardener)

“Myself, Ella Mckenna, Olly Mckenna, Darrin Carlisle and Ian Hogarth) went down last Sunday and planted all the plants and got everything in order ready for Sunday’s parade.

“The local community really have rallied together to make this happen and we couldn't be anymore grateful especially in the current difficult times.

“We would love to see people attend on Sunday to show their respects.”
