Sunderland chef honoured as 'covid curry hero' for efforts during pandemic
Syed Islam has been named a "Covid Curry Hero" by restaurant trade magazine Curry Life after his Durham-based restaurant went ‘above and beyond’ to offer help and support during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Syed, who lives in Sunderland, and his team at The Capital Indian restaurant in Claypath, Durham City, made food deliveries to vulnerable people as well as offering meals to all NHS staff and care workers.

Hide AdThe chef said: "My own family members works for the care profession, that's why I was aware that they’re working very long hours.
"I understand what pressure the NHS staffs were under the peak of the pandemic and they are still doing a great job for the community and I was just doing my bit.”
UK-based restaurant trade magazine, Curry Life praised Syed and his team’s work for helping the community during the covid-19 crisis.
Editor in Chief of Curry Life Magazine Syed Nahas Pasha, said: “Despite the unprecedented problems posed by the present pandemic, these curry houses have gone out of their way to be almost a fourth emergency service to vulnerable people.

He added: “Their efforts really deserve to be recognised as truly heroic-and we are delighted to be able to mark their magnificent contributions in this way.”
