Sunderland Bonmarche store saved from closure by business takeover

The Sunderland Bonmarche store has been saved from closure after the brand was taken over by The Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group.

It was the second time the company had fallen into administration in the last seven years, after struggling with rising costs and lack of custom from high street shoppers.

In the run up to Christmas, the Sunderland store announced that it was due to close as a result of the business collapse.

This means that all staff at the store will keep their jobs and customers will be able to continue shopping at the store.

A member of staff at the Sunderland store confirmed that Bonmarche would be staying open.

In a statement on its website Bonmarche said: “A new chapter: Thank you for all of your support.

“We’re now under new ownership and are excited to welcome you back as part of The EWM Group.”

A spokeswoman for Bonmarche said: “We are working hard to secure as many stores as possible.”

Commenting on the Echo’s Facebook page at the time the closure was announced, resident Jan Foley said: “Such a shame, most of their clothing is for the older generation and to be honest there isn't much choice for them either here or in Newcastle.

“Another retail outlet closing means that more people become unemployed.”

Brenda Yarnell Meadows added: “Nice shop such a shame.”

Elaine Bolam said: “Best store in the high street, hope they find a way out.

“They get everything right for the shorter in height person. Saddened.”

Jackie Alexander commented: “What stores will be left I wonder, so very sad.”
