Sunderland becomes a film set – and you can be part of it

A film is being shot in Sunderland city centre – and here’s how you can get involved.

Members of the public are being invited down to Keel Crossing, in Sunderland, at 9pm on Friday, September 4 to take part in the filming of a “top secret” movie.

Freelance producer Carley Armstrong, who is working on the production, said: "It’s top secret what it’s for and what it’s going to do but it’s a Sunderland film and I need as many Sunderland fans to come down to Keel Crossing at 9pm on Friday, September 4.

"I’m planning to do a huge shot with cranes and drones and flares.

"There’s going to be dancing and all kinds of cool stuff and we’re going to shoot loads of fans.

"It’s going to be iconic.”

Carley, 36, grew up in Hendon and graduated from the University of Sunderland in 2014 with a first class degree in TV and film.

She has worked on a number of award-winning productions throughout her career, including Adolescence and Mission Impossible.

For Carley, her dream is “to be making stuff here in Sunderland” – something that has come true as the film is produced in collaboration with Why Not Productions and Sunderland AFC.

Carley said: "My dream is to be making stuff here in Sunderland and now the club is supporting me with it.”

She added: "We can’t really talk about what the film is but it’s going to be really special.

"Everybody’s behind it and everybody’s getting involved.”

Carley regularly travels up and down the country as part of her job: “It’s tough coming up and down from London all the time but I’m determined to make things happen.

"I want to give back to the region – I want to give my knowledge, contacts and experience.”

She added: "It’s really nice that we’re all coming together to do something like this.”

People heading down to Keel Crossing on Friday are asked to wear Sunderland’s red and white colours as producers capture a series of night-time shots of supporters.

Carley said: “We need Sunderland to show up properly in numbers.”
