Sunderland Airshow 2021 - The latest update from the city council

With the Government’s having unveiled it’s roadmap to easing lockdown restrictions, it could potentially mean big events may be able to go ahead by the summer months.

Sunderland Airshow is scheduled to take place from July 23 to July 25 later this year but organisers are yet to confirm if the event will go ahead.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators usually attend the summer event, with aerial displays by the RAF’s Red Arrows team among regular highlights.

Linda Williams, Cabinet Member for Vibrant City, told the Echo: “We are currently working through the roadmap and its implications for all City Council events in Sunderland this year.”

It is estimated about 400,000 turned out for 2019’s edition of the Airshow, pumping more than £5million into the Wearside economy.

Earlier today (Wedneday, February 23) organisers of Reading and Leeds Festival, which is due to take place at the end of August, appeared to confirmed the music festival will be going ahead.

In January, Glastonbury, which was due to celebrate it’s 50th birthday in June 2020, has been postponed for another year.

The Government’s four-step plan has outlined when which elements of society will reopen.

However, Boris Johnson said there must be at least five weeks between each step and if the analysis of the data requires a delay for one step – all future steps will be delayed.
