Council workers could be seen mowing a giant rainbow in the grass on Kier Hardie Way, near to the Stadium of Light on the morning of Friday, April 24.
It is thought to be in tribute to the city’s NHS staff and key workers fighting on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis.

Hide AdThe rainbow has become a symbol of hope during the pandemic, with many people displaying them in their windows as a thank you to the NHS.
A Sunderland resident, who saw the tribute being created on Friday morning commented that the rainbow was “lovely” and it was nice to see the council “doing their bit for the NHS”.
