See the giant sand poppy carved into Sunderland beach to mark Remembrance Sunday

A poignant sand poppy was carved into the sands at Sunderland’s Roker Beach to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Teacher Nicola Parker said: “All poppies were made from plastic bottles and the children painted them with acrylic paint.”

While ongoing lockdown restrictions are preventing public services from taking place, we will be publishing a report and photos here from restricted ceremonies later on Remembrance Sunday.

The city is also marking Remembrance Sunday by lighting up landmarks and streets in red from today until Armistice Day November 11.

They include Penshaw Monument, the Northern Spire bridge, Fulwell Mill, Seaburn’s White Lighthouse, Keel Square and High Street West.
