This circular walk, which is 4.4 miles or 7.1km long, starts and finishes at the main car park in Barnes Park and it is estimated to take approximately one hour and 15 minutes complete.
The heritage trail, which has been produced by Sunderland City Council, takes you through the history of Barnes Park and Grindon Sandhill.
Along the way, you will take in scenic views of Sunderland’s skyline and a piece of Wearside history which dates back to the 1600s.

1. Starting point
You can start the walk either in the main car park of Barnes Park or at the entrance on Barnes Park Road. Follow the path, passing the children's play area. Photo: Google Maps
2. Take the first right

3. Barnes Park
The land for Barnes Park was bought by the Borough of Sunderland in 1904 for £8,500. Work commenced on the site in 1907 and the park was officially opened on August 6 1909. Photo: JPI
4. Walk up the bank
Keep following the path around the lake and up the bankside, passing the bandstand on the left. Continue to walk up the bank where you should reach the cannon. Photo: Google Maps
