Rising Sunderland boxing star is in the running for an award

A teenage boxing star from Sunderland is hoping to be a step away from landing his next win – at the Best of Wearside Awards.

Callum Drinkald, 15, from Southwick is in contention in the Sporting Achievement category of the awards after a series of triumphs in the last year.

He won the Junior ABA National Championships, became a Great British champion, a class A NAGBC champion, won the England Boxing Junior title and secured gold at the GB Three Nations event.

He has also represented his country three times in the past year.

Proud mum Marie Foot said: “I could not be any prouder of what he has done. He is a little superstar.

“I would be over the moon if he won a Best of Wearside Award. It would be a great achievement for him and he deserves it.”

The award nomination for Callum told of his total dedication to the sport. It said: “Callum spends hours upon hours training at Wearmouth Boxing club in Sunderland.The sheer focus and determination this young boy shows reflects the outstanding achievements he has had in the sport of boxing this year.

“Callum is totally dedicated to his sport and I believe by winning this award, it would give him the recognition he well and truly deserves.”

Also in the family is Callum’s dad Darren Drinkald and Callum’s sisters Chelsie, 22, Alisha, 7, and Talia, 6.

They’re hoping Callum can bring home a trophy in the 2020 Best of Wearside Awards which are already keenly contested.

But we want more even more nominations so that we can make the judges job that much harder.

Now comes your turn to get involved by nominating by March 2.

Just send your name, address and telephone number, as well as your email address, if applicable.

And remember to include the category that you are putting your nominated cause into.

Also, make sure you send the name of the person you wish to nominate, along with their address, telephone number and email (if known).

Once the nomination deadline has passed, judges will meet to draw up the shortlist in each category.

Everyone who reaches the shortlist stage will be invited to the grand finale which will be held at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, April 1.
