Residents urged to close windows and doors as firefighters tackle large blaze

Firefighters have tackled a large container blaze in Houghton which saw nearby residents urged to keep their doors and windows shut.

Crews from Fencehouses and Farringdon were called to a container fire on Lumley Crescent in Houghton at around 5.56pm on Tuesday, September 29.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it was a ‘large fire’, with residents warned about the heavy smoke in the area

Two engines used hose reel jets to put out the flames before leaving the scene at 7pm.

A Tweet from the fire service during the incident said: “Crews are dealing with a fire at Lumley Crescent in Houghton.

Residents nearby please keep your windows and doors closed due to large amounts of smoke in the area.”
