The bid has been launched for the airport to reflect both of the cities it serves in Tyne and Wear, the councillors say. ‘Newcastle Sunderland International Airport’ is the new name they are proposing to help put Sunderland ‘on the map’.

The Wearside Lib Dems lodged a debate and vote to take place at the Sunderland City Council meeting on Wednesday, June 23.

This is what you had to say on the Sunderland Echo Facebook page:

Dave Palmer: “When I read the headline I thought "nonsense" but if you read the article you will see a valid comment that Yorkshire has Leeds Bradford and Doncaster Sheffield Airports so reflect the major contributions of that area so why not Newcastle Sunderland?”

Shaun Crosby: “Sunderland is already on the map, slightly north of Middlesbrough and just below Newcastle.”

Kevin Horsley: "Like most things it will take a while to get over but either the North East International Airport or the Tyne and Wear International Airport would fit the bill.”

Rachel Fisher: “Isn’t it in Newcastle? I don’t think anyone is bothered as long as it has aeroplanes for holidays, crack on!”

Andrew Strachan: “Can't see this going down well with the Geordies!”

Ann Carrick: "Newcastle and Sunderland airport yeah, suits me fine. Maybe it should be the NE Airport or Sunderland and Newcastle to put the cat amongst the pigeons.”

Barry Holyoak: “It’s nearer Ponteland than any of those two.”

Nathan Shezza: “Not bothered what it’s called as long as I can go on holiday and drink beer in there.”

Elizabeth Allen: “No to changing something that’s not broken. Newcastle Airport is perfectly named and does not need any name adjustment.”
