Sunderland's senior coroner Derek Winter adjourned the inquest until Wednesday, June 10, to allow police to continue with their inquiries.

Mr Winter said: “I opened the inquest last year and it has been adjourned so that police can conclude their inquiries.

“Until their inquiries are concluded I can’t make a decision about what to do with the inquest hearing.

“If the police proceed to make charges, then this inquest will be adjourned pending criminal proceedings.

“Until we get to that stage we can’t make a decision on what to do.”

Mr Winter adjourned the inquest until Wednesday, June 10, at Sunderland Coroner’s Court, pending police inquiries.
