For those who may have found themselves in a position where they can no longer care for their pup, it could be a perfect opportunity for the furry friend to become a new police recruit.

Durham Constabulary’s Dog Support Unit is looking for new dogs to join the team, working with officers as Specialist Support Dogs.

PC Ian Squire said: “We’re looking for anybody who may have, or may know of people who have, a dog that would like to come and join our team.

"The idea would be that they are keen to play with toy, ages between 12 to 18 months ideally but possibly up to two years old depending on the dog.”

Pups that meet the criteria could be the ideal candidates for the next training course, which will start later this year.
