Plans submitted to redevelop former Sunderland car dealership site
Plans have been submitted for the redevelopment of a former car dealership site in Wearside.
Sunderland City Council’s planning department has received an application for the vacant former Volvo car dealership at Hylton Grange.
The site sits alongside Wessington Way near the Wessington Brewers Fayre pub, a Premier Inn and a new Starbucks drive-through.
New plans from Sytner Group Ltd seek permission for new spray booths as part of a wider redevelopment of the site.

Supporting planning documents confirm Sytner Group Ltd is in the process of refurbishing the existing building internally to “reopen it as a different brand dealership”.
A design and access statement submitted to council officials notes the new spray booths would be based at the “enclosed back of house area in front of the workshop and parts department vehicle/pedestrian access doors”.
It adds that the booths would “allow the dealership to offer on-site cosmetic and smart repairs services to their customers with the advantage of these type of works being done in a fully controlled environment”.
The statement adds: “The spray booths are prefabricated units that once delivered on site will only need to be positioned as per proposed drawings and connected to the services supply.
“They are plug-and-play, low-bake, low-energy car paint booths designed to meet modern car dealership demand for cosmetic and smart repairs.”
Due to the size of the booths, the applicants are also proposing to “extend the fence on the left-hand side over one of the existing car spaces previously designated to MOT services for back of house staff use.”
A decision on the planning application is expected following a council consultation exercise.
