Pedestrian fights for life in hospital after A690 crash near Sunderland
A pedestrian was hit by a mini-bus and is “in a critical condition” with life-threatening injuries following Tuesday morning’s rush-hour incident, police have said.
The collision happened on the Sunderland-bound stretch of the A690, near Over-the-Hill Farm, between Houghton and Stoneygate, at around 8.20am.

Hide AdThe Great North Air Ambulance landed at 9.10am and airlifted the man to Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, following treatment at the scene.
The road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident with motorists diverted along the A182 around Houghton.
Northumbria Police said: “At about 8.35am officers attended the scene where a man had collided with a vehicle.
“The ambulance service attended the scene where the pedestrian was taken to hospital. He is described as being in a life-threatening condition.”

Hide AdThe incident was the second serious crash on the same stretch of the A690 in less than a week.
“Devoted” dad-of-four daughters Gary Sloan, 38, of Sunderland, died last Friday after his black Ford Fiesta left the road near Houghton Cut and collided with a hedge row at around 11.25am.
Police do not believe any other vehicles were involved in Tuesday’s crash.
