A huge advert for a great charity event had to be changed after it was put in Sunderland rather than Newcastle.

The large electronic hoarding in Keel Square, slap-bang in the centre of Sunderland city centre, was supposed to promote the Race For Life at Herrington Park on May 28.

However, owing to an honest mistake, Wearsiders were shown an advert saying: “Newcastle, who will you race for?” promoting an equivalent event north of the Tyne on July 8 and 9.

Both races will raise vital funds for Cancer Research. The correct sign confirms that Sunderland will host 3k, 5k, and 10k run and “Pretty Muddy” events. There are also races in Hartlepool and Gateshead.

Michaela Robinson-Tate, Cancer Research UK spokesperson, said: “We are extremely proud of our Race for Life events across the North East, including in Sunderland and in Newcastle.

“It’s thanks to the generosity of people from both cities who take part in Race for Life that thousands of pounds are raised every year for life-saving research to beat cancer.

“For a short period of time, the electronic billboard in Keel Square, Sunderland, mistakenly advertised the Race for Life Newcastle event instead of Race for Life Sunderland.
