The Northumbria Unit of the Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) have resumed their nautical activities on North East rivers as the pandemic eases.

The MVS trains its members – many of whom have had no previous connection with the sea – in nautical skills and supports communities and port authorities by providing safety patrols contributing to compliance with Port Marine Safety Code.

Their area of operation stretches from the Tweed to the Tees and members come from all parts of the region.

The MVS has more than 25 active units spread around the UK coastline at major port and river areas, with more units planned.

Northumbria Unit is based at St Peter’s Marina on the Tyne where they have two vessels: “Melita” a Colvic Northerner and “Northumberland Freemason” a rigid inflatable boat.

Head of Unit, Angela Carrington was delighted the unit was once again physically able to meet for scheduled training for the first time after 14 months of virtual training via Zoom.

“It’s fantastic to see everyone down at the Marina and we have a lot of plans for the summer season including training exercises and regular patrols on the Tyne. We’ve also a few of our members about to undergo their powerboat qualifications which will strengthen up our skills base,” she said.

The unit are currently recruiting. Any one over the age of 18 can apply and there is no upper age limit. No experience of boats is necessary as training will be given. Anyone wishing to know more about the MVS can email [email protected]
