He wrote, edited, and formatted the novel – even designing its cover with the help of daughter Lily, 11, who shot the image of him in front of Sunderland’s Wearmouth Bridge.

The book was self-published on Amazon, following a race to get it completed in time for Daniel’s return to work in May.

"It sold 200 copies and had 500 downloads on Kindle in just the first six weeks.

“It’s all been really positive and I’ve had no negative reviews. I’ve felt quite emotional about it."

Now Daniel is working on the second novel in what is planned to be a trilogy.

He added: “I think it’s surprised a lot of people!

"I have always kept my writing to myself, so when I told my mam and dad I had written a book they couldn’t believe it!
