New estate's streets to be named in honour of brave Bradley Lowery

Housebuilder Gleeson Homes has teamed up with Bradley’s mum Gemma Lowery to name the roads on its new development in Blackhall Colliery.

Two of the streets on the firm’s Hardwicke Place development have been named by Gemma in Bradley’s honour - Bradley Lowery Way and Sunshine Place. Sunshine was the nickname Gemma and husband Carl gave Bradley, due to his sunny disposition despite the pain and discomfort he was suffering throughout his illness.

Bradley’s battle against cancer touched the hearts of the nation before he tragically lost his fight in July 2017. The six-year-old was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer found mainly in babies and young children, at the age of just 18 months.

Hardwicke Place is less than a mile from where Bradley lived with his parents, and Gleeson were introduced to Gemma Lowery by Graeme Blenkinsopp of Wisemove Land Agents, who helped secure the land on which Hardwicke Place will be built.

Sarah Marsden, Divisional Managing Director at Gleeson said: “We are delighted to be commemorating Bradley by naming the roads on Hardwicke Place after him.

"As the designated charity for all of Gleeson’s North Eastern Division, we will be continually raising money for the Bradley Lowery Foundation throughout our next financial year and beyond with various fundraising initiatives.”

A delighted Gemma added: “When I was contacted by Gleeson and they explained they wanted to name a street after Bradley, I was completely overwhelmed.

"I think it is an incredible gesture, it keeps Bradley’s name and legacy alive for years to come. Gleeson are continuing to support the Bradley Lowery Foundation and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone involved.

"I am very grateful.”

Homes at Hardwicke Place will go on sale in the autumn, with the show homes and sales office launched in December 2021.

Gleeson is seeking local labour and sub-contractors to work on Hardwicke Place, including applications from local young people who are interested in joining the Gleeson apprenticeship scheme.
