New Derby pub in Roker reveals plans for outdoor area revamp
A Sunderland pub could soon benefit from improved outdoor facilities.
An application has been submitted on behalf of the New Derby, in Roker Baths Road, to “improve the customer experience” in its rear outdoor area.
The pub’s owners, Greene King, want to create a new timber pergola in the beer garden, which would also benefit from festoon lighting, heaters and a TV.
An accompanying design and access statement claims the plans would improve facilities at the pub, described as an “integral part of the local community”.

The revamp also aims to attract more customers and ensure it is “more suited to safe socialising and dining for all”.
Greene King insists the revamp plan has been “carefully considered to suit the scale of the premises” and designed to offer a safer and more enjoyable experience for customers.
The design and access statement continues: “Our client believes that a pub is an important part of any community, as it offers a place for people to socialise and relax in an alternative environment to their home.
“The public house is very popular with the local community. Often the pub is one of the few places which is inclusive to many areas of society.
“Greene King would like to strengthen this into the area by offering improved facilities throughout and ensure the pub be more suited to safe socialising and dining for all.”
A decision on the plan is expected following a consultation.
