Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, which patrols both force areas, said one of its team had made the discovery at the end of their working day, with the little visitor soon scarpering after they were disturbed.

They shared photos of a chewed notepad and gnawed wires of the bike’s electrics discovered in the wake of the rodent’s trip in the vehicle.

Through their Twitter account, @Durpol_Bikes, they posted to say: “A bit of a surprise today after a mouse was found nesting in the back of one of our police motorcycles.

“The poor thing had been a passenger all day but made good his escape at the end of the shift.

“Not sure the sergeant is going to believe this one.”
