Germany defender Rudiger reported being the subject of monkey chants during the match against Spurs, the latest in a series of incidents at all levels of the game this season, and has led to the Professional Footballers' Association calling for a government-led inquiry.

Downing Street said that there remains work to be done by the football authorities to stamp out racism, but did not rule out "taking further steps if required".

Spurs launched an investigation in the aftermath of Sunday's 2-0 defeat but, in an update on Monday, said there has been little progress despite working with lip-readers and having reviewed hours of CCTV footage.

We asked readers if they think the Government should open an investigation into racism in football.

And 70% of votes by 863 said believe an inquiry should be launched.

Here’s what readers had to say:

Kevin Nelson: “Start deducting teams of points and if their fans commit the same offence relegate them out of the league at the end of the season. I don’t understand what the government can do to stop it and personally I think you’re always going to get that one clown anyways. Harsh punishments can at least reduce it.”

Andrew Hutchinson: “Understand people’s feelings on this, totally agree racism is and should not be allowed anywhere in society and the culprits dealt with severely but I don’t think football and politics should go together. It could damage the game even more. Football associations around the world need to deal with it.”

David Braley: “The FA and the clubs need to get together on this, can't see what a government enquiry could do that the clubs couldn't do.”

Chris Ogle: “Government intervention? It was racist abuse by a fan, surely he will be arrested and charged. What more would the government be able to do? If it was the club itself yes. But I cant see what they would do? End football? Threaten to close the club if it continues? Punish the idiots who do it.”
