Gemma, who launched the Bradley Lowery Foundation in memory of the couple’s six-year-old son, posted a touching message to Carl on the charity's Facebook page.

In it, she said her husband was ‘lucky to be alive' following an accident in May and spoke of their joint strength in getting through the difficult times.

Bradley, who died in 2017 after suffering neuroblastoma cancer, inspired a legacy of support for poorly children.

To date, the Foundation has raised huge amounts of money for youngsters facing a range of challenges, launched a support line for families of children with cancer and had permission approved for a holiday home in Scarborough.

Gemma’s post said: “Myself and my amazing husband Carl have been together for 21 years. We started dating at the age of 16, which seems like an eternity ago.

"Everyone has ups and downs and I have to say, we have had enough downs to last a lifetime. However I don't think anyone's life goes exactly as planned.

“We never expected what life threw at us, losing Bradley was the worst thing we could of [sic] ever imagined.

"Then this year in May, just a few days before Bradley’s birthday, Carl had a serious accident in which he is very lucky to be alive.

"He was in hospital for two weeks and he has been left unable to work due to his injury, as you can imagine it has been yet another difficult time but we [are] getting through it together

“We have two amazing children, who make us so proud, and although Bradley is with the angels, his legacy lives on in not only us, but all of you too, because without everyone’s support, I wouldn’t be able to do the amazing things for his charity.”
