Three-year-old Katie Black was devastated to find that two of the three beautiful pumpkins she had worked so hard to decorate had been taken from the front of the house in Glebe where she lives with her mam, Suzanne Black.

But it seems there are more good people in the world than bad.

Suzanne posted what had happened on Facebook, and in no time had received almost 150 messages of support, with over 600 angry reactions.

It’s fair to say the outraged posters did not hold back on their opinions of the people who took the youngster’s pumpkins.

After the post, Washington cleaning company A2Z teamed up with Adventure World in Durham to give Katie a day out at their pumpkin festival.

Suzanne, an apprenticeship assessor, said: “Because Katie couldn’t go trick or treating under covid rules, we made three lanterns including two from baby pumpkins.

"I put them outside and some time between 8pm and 7am someone came and took them. She couldn’t understand where they’d gone.

"I don’t usually post things on social media, but I felt so furious for her. The pumpkins were obviously children’s things. There’s been a spate of this in Washington.

“I was gobsmacked by the response I got online. People have stopped me in The Galleries too to ask me about it.

“What A2Z and Adventure Valley have done is just lovely and I thank them very much.”

Katie’s day out was arranged by A2Z director Aaron Stevens and his friend Marco Calzini at Adventure Valley.

Aaron said he felt obliged to do something after reading Suzanne’s message.

He said: “I think it’s nice to be nice and put something back into the community, especially in the current situation. A little girl sitting at home with her parents and this happens. It’s pretty shocking really, so we wanted to put that smile back on her face.

“I’d like to say a word for Marco too, who didn’t hesitate to help.”
