'Leave a tin Washington' doorstep donation scheme sees more than 100 boxes flood in

‘Leave a tin Washington’ was set up by Samantha Jane, Nicola Armstrong and Sarah Trueman with the idea of collecting one tin of donations for the Washington food bank.
The group were shocked by the overwhelming response from the community, with residents offering to donate full bags and boxes of food and a Facebook page set up for the project gained over 1,000 members.

One of the group founders, Sarah Trueman, 39, said: “The response was overwhelming. You have to remember the whole idea was just to ask each person to leave one tin of food on their doorstop. That alone with the response would have made an amazing contribution to the food bank, but what we received from people was boxes and carrier bags full of stuff.
“People actually went out buying things to donate and all we wanted was that random tin at the back of the cupboard that someone else in need could make good use of.”
