Beloved pet, Mollie, was attacked by a dog outside the Best One Shop, in Station Road, Washington and has been left with serious injuries to her back and legs.

The large wound on the 10-year-old parson terrier’s leg then became infect and required surgery – leaving the pooch with a hole in her back leg and the family facing a vet bill which has now topped £800.

Now Mollie’s family are desperate to ensure steps are taken so the dog responsible, which was on it’s lead during the attack, doesn’t hurt anyone else.

Jayden Seddon, who owns the family pet, Mollie, who lives with his dad Dennis, said: “My dad had gone to the shop and tied Mollie up outside while he quickly popped in.

“It was when he got to the cash point that he found out she was being attacked. It took the two owners of the other dog and my dad to pull the dog, a light coloured Staffordshire Cross, off Mollie.

“She has three puncture wounds in her back and a large wound at the top of her left leg.

“We rushed her to the vets and she was stitched up and given antibiotics but the wound got severely infected.

“She’s had surgery to remove the infection and she now has a hole in her side and we’ve been given cream to try and revive the skin.

“Thankfully she seems to be getting better.”

But Jayden, who is working at Asda after being furloughed from his job as a security guard during the coronavirus pandemic, says the family fear the attack could have been a lot worse.

“I wasn't going to let this slide, had a child been attacked it would have been a different story,” said the 26-year-old.

“It’s been absolutely horrible for the whole family. My dad was in shock at the time.

“We now have the stress of having to pay for her medical treatment. Friends, family and the public have been amazing and we set up the Just Giving page because we had a lot of people who said they wanted to help us pay for the costs.

“My sister says Mollie is starting to get back on her feet. She’s enjoying going out for little walks still which helps keep her distracted after we put the cream on her.

“Mollie is a rescue dog and my dad had to do a lot of rehabilitation with her so we don’t know how this will affect her when she sees other dogs.”

Jayden says the family doesn’t know where to turn and have passed between Northumbria Police and Sunderland City Council – with both saying the other is responsible for investigating the incident. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “On April 16, we received a report that a dog had been attacked by another dog while it was chained up outside the Best One shop in Station Road, Washington.

"The case is being reviewed to see if any criminal offences have been committed."
