From the dance hall to their diamond wedding anniversary - Sunderland couple mark 60 years of marriage

Sadie Hall and Al Humes met at Seaburn Hall in 1958 and wed two year’s later at St Luke’s Church.

On Thursday, August 20, the pair, who have lived in the same house in Pallion since they married, will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary with their family.

Sadie, 85, said that having ‘no secrets’ was the trick to a long and happy marriage.

She said: "I think what’s made it work is that we’ve always pulled together, we’ve got no secrets and always been honest and I think the other thing is our family, we just love them to bits.”

At the time of their wedding, Pallion-born Sadie worked at Cosmos, while Al, who was born in Seaham, was in the Merchant Navy.

Sadie went on to work at businesses including Pyrex, Carricks and Dewhirst’s and after leaving the Navy, Al worked as a maintenance fitter at Pyrex, where he remained until he retired in 1992.

They are parents to Ian, 58, and Gillian Calder, 56, and in-laws to Ian’s wife Lynne, 57, and Gillian’s husband Ian, 56, and grandparents to Ian and Lynne’s children Anthony, 28, and Stephanie, 25, and Gillian and Ian’s children Sarah, 25, and Leah, 22.

In retirement, Sadie and Al have enjoyed gardening and Al took up golf and regularly played at Elmore Golf Club in Easington Lane.

Al, 86, occasionally meets up with friends at Steels Social Club and Sadie enjoys baking and outings with their grandchildren.
