Firefighters tackle rubbish blaze in Sunderland back street
Firecrews have tackled burning rubbish in Sunderland this evening.
A pile of mattresses and furniture which had been left in a back street off Roker Baths Road in Roker were ablaze.
A witness said: "You could see the plume of smoke for several miles - I saw it from the aquatic centre.
"There are two fire engines and the police are there as well.
"It is a load of mattresses and furniture that had been left there in the last couple of hours."
Crew manager Steve Howe, from Marley Park fire station, said: "We got the call at 19.50 and we were there for about 20 minutes.
"Someone had put a load of old furniture out in the back lane.
"Fortunately it had not spread and we were able to keep it contained to the back lane."
